Helping people live in their homes longer

Over time, what people need in their homes changes. In this case, I got a call from someone who had just received a new hip and was being told by their hospital physiotherapist how careful they would have to be navigating the stairs in her home. It was urgent that a railing be installed on the short flight of stairs from the kitchen to the living room of this split-level home. I didn't mind working a Saturday to get this done under the circumstances. It wasn't a simple fully-walled stairway. It was a more open space. I was able to install a free-standing newel-post at the bottom of the stairs and attach the railing to the arch of a doorway at the top. The result was good and sturdy, and more fitting to the decor than a chrome safety railing from a mobility store would have been. A couple of weeks later, when the client could allow drying time for stain and varathane to dry, I was back to make the new wood blend in better with the flooring. I have to admit, earning a living feels good, but helping good people feels even better!
